Hello & Welcome to 5th Grade Social Studies!

My name is Ms. Miller, and I am so excited to be your 5th grade Social Studies teacher! I can't wait to begin a year filled with learning, growth, and memorable experiences.

My Experience

Sonoran Foothills is truly home to me! This is my third year at Sonoran Foothills. I spent my first year here as a student teacher, where I had the opportunity to work with both 3rd grade and Student Support Services. Since then, I have been teaching in the classroom and have loved being part of this amazing school community.

I graduated from Grand Canyon University with a degree in Elementary and Special Education and have earned my SEI (Structured English Immersion) endorsement. I am passionate about creating a positive, engaging classroom where every student feels supported, challenged, and excited to learn.

I look forward to partnering with you and your family to make this a successful and enjoyable school year. Welcome to 5th grade!

About the Teacher

I've always had a passion for history and helping students make meaningful connections to the past. I was born and raised in Washington State and moved to Arizona to attend college, and I've loved calling Arizona home ever since.

When I'm not in the classroom, I enjoy reading, hiking, spending time with my family and friends, and treating myself to a Starbucks iced latte - one of my favorite things!

5th Grade Social Studies

In fifth grade, students become historians as they explore the growth of the United States from the American Revolution through Reconstruction.

Unit 1: The American Revolution – Learn how America fought for and won its independence.
Unit 2: Government & the Constitution – Discover how our government was created and how it works today.
Unit 3: The Early Republic – Explore how the new nation grew under its first leaders.
Unit 4: Political & Geographic Changes – Learn how the United States expanded and changed over time.
Unit 5: Life in the North & South – Compare life in the North and South before the Civil War.
Unit 6: The Civil War – Examine the causes, major events, and outcomes of the Civil War.
Unit 7: Reconstruction – Learn how the nation rebuilt after the Civil War.

Special Program

JA BizTown – Students participate in a hands-on economic and civic simulation where they run businesses, earn paychecks, and make real-world financial decisions.
